Who is Pran Boon or the Manora Hunter Mask?
In the traditional Manora dance drama, the character Phra Buun (also known as Pran Boon, Manora Hunter, or Hunter Mask) is considered a comic figure who entertains the audience with humorous gestures, playful movements, and close interaction with viewers. This makes him a favorite character for people of all ages.
According to belief, a "hunter" in Thai folklore must possess strong magical knowledge and protective powers, otherwise he could not survive in the mystical forests filled with dangerous animals and supernatural beings. Among all hunters, Phan Boon is regarded as the greatest and most powerful, a legendary master hunter admired for his wisdom and strength.
Legend says that Pran Boon once helped save the life of the Naga King, Chao Chomphuchit. In gratitude, the Naga King brought Pran Boon into the Naga Realm for seven days and gifted him a magical gem with a promise: whenever Pran Boon needed help, he could come and request anything he desired.
Later, Pran Boon sought to capture the seven Kinnari princesses, daughters of King Thumrat. To achieve this, he borrowed the Naga Rope (Nakabat) from the Naga King, a powerful tool capable of binding celestial beings. With it, he successfully captured Manora, the youngest princess, and presented her to Prince Sudhana. This act made him famous as a figure of great mystical power, associated with wealth, fortune, and supernatural abilities.
It is also told that Luang Phor Khiew of Wat Huay Ngo, Pattani, once remarked:
"No business or trade can bring returns as quickly as Pran Boon. By capturing just one celestial princess, he was rewarded by the King with an entire city, wealth, treasures, and countless followers."
